![]() Achieving all of this without such memorable characters is as hard as anyone would imagine. One of the great things about Portal 2 was how even though its levels were apart, and the game had numerous loading screens, it all felt part of one big thing.Īnd this doesn’t only include the Aperture facilities making the game’s events feel like one big story is a work of art, mostly supported by GLaDOS and Wheatley. Additionally, this mod also includes custom textures, models, and even music. Nonetheless, it’s a great option for players who are actually willing to keep being test subjects. Taking a beloved world and completely changing its setting could have angered many Portal 2 fans. Besides cosmetic changes, Above Aperture does include pretty hard levels, which keep the Portal 2 spirit high and alive.Īll in all, Above Aperture is a risky effort. Even if it’s still Portal 2, it feels like a lot more. In this custom-made extension, Chell gets to visit what looks a lot like an abandoned city with open-sky levels and outdoor transitions between tests. Don’t get me wrong, the whole underground facilities setting was extremely necessary for the story, but sometimes it got a bit too damp and dark. I know it may not sound like a really big deal, but being able to see the sky while trying to figure out the puzzles in Portal 2 does feel a lot more like freedom. As Chell, you take a trip to unknown parts of the Aperture Center from which you can see the sky. What does Aperture look like to the people in the non-test environments? Well, Above Aperture, a 4 part mod, is based on that idea. Portal 2 is an underground adventure, and even though every level is beautifully designed, sometimes you may have wondered how deep those labs actually were. ![]() ![]() That’s a huge detail and any Portal 2 fan will agree. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity to check out how far a mod can change its own base game with a little bit of innovation.īy the way, if everything above isn’t enough, there’s a lot of custom content: the time-machine pad, textures, and even an improved Chell model which allows players to see their own feet. While playing Portal 2 with a friend would require real-time decisions and actions, Thinking with Time Machine requires planning and perfect timing so the interactions with your twin are actually successful.Įven though it lacks a bit of portal action since it’s mainly focused on time traveling, Thinking with Time Machine does add a new twist to Portal 2’s gameplay. Undoubtedly, there’s a whole new level of strategy behind this mechanic. This way, you can do the rest of the work and become your own best teammate. Pressing another button will then trigger the creation of a twin Chell, who repeats everything you did. In addition to having the portal device, you also get to use a time machine in order to solve rooms and be a perfectly efficient test subject.īy pressing a button on said time machine (which looks pretty much like a tablet), you record your actions. With this very popular mod, instead of being a robot and messing around with a friend, you are Chell… twice. ![]() If you don’t want to play a story you already know and you’d rather play alone, Thinking with Time Machine is the Portal 2 mod for you. This is even more true when taking into account the huge amount of user-made maps focused on cooperative gameplay. Either way, being one of those funny robots is always worth it. It can be all about killing your partner in the most treacherous ways, or finding the sweet momentum of teamwork. Besides having a really amazing single-player story, the co-op mode in Portal 2 is what keeps you going back. This means that you’re the only person who can access your vault. This is great because even if Dashlane was breached, your data wouldn’t be compromised (but Dashlane has never been involved in a breach).ĭashlane also has a zero-knowledge protocol. Live dark web monitoring - scans the dark web in real time and provides instant alerts in case of a leaked email address.ĭashlane’s Premium plan is 100% secure, feature-rich, and easy to use, but it’s a bit more expensive than top competitors like 1Password and RoboForm.Password health checker - analyzes your password vault for weak, reused, or compromised passwords and gives you an overall password health score.Virtual private network (VPN) - provides unlimited secure web browsing and runs faster than many standalone VPNs (Dashlane is the only password manager that provides a bundled VPN).And all of Dashlane’s additional tools worked exactly as promised - these are the extra features I like the most: It uses unbreakable end-to-end encryption to secure user data, has a wide range of high-security features, and provides more useful extras than almost any other competitor.Īll of Dashlane’s standard password management tools worked perfectly during my tests - I found it incredibly easy to import, generate, save, and share passwords, auto-fill logins and forms, set up two-factor authentication (2FA), and check whether or not my passwords were secure enough. ![]() Dashlane is one of the best password managers in 2022. ![]() ![]() In fact, there's an entire school of thought that advocates that managers should be entirely focused on management tasks, and stay away from technical work.įor better or worse, I don't buy into that. With 9-or-so people on the team, being able to accurately focus attention on the right set of problems is critical to the security of the perimeter. When I got promoted to staff, then to manager, then to senior manager, the proportion of technical work gradually reduced to make room for managerial work. I spent my days doing security reviews, making guides and writing code. I started out at Mozilla as a senior security engineer focused entirely on operations and infrastructure. And while I certainly wouldn't take that book to the letter, it raises a number of points which I think are relevant to security professionals. Dale Carnegie's 1936 " How to Win Friends & Influence People" covers this at length. In fact, it's old school business playbook. Emphasize the parts of your project or idea that your audience will be most interested in to catch their attention, without losing the nature of your work. Engineers will care about one thing, their managers something else, and the executives another thing entirely. That story will also change depending on your audience. Finding out what that is will increase your chances of success. If you want to get people interested in what you're doing, first you need to take interest into what they are doing, then you need to tell them a good story they will care about. Don't go lecture them on the need for network security monitoring in datacenters, they simply won't care, as it doesn't touch them. If you're working on a security review of a nodejs application hosted in heroku, tell them stories of other nodejs applications hosted in heroku, ideally from a nearby team or organization. Or more accurately, tell a story that touches your audience directly. The is a right balance to be found between too short and too long, depending on the context and your audience. Being overly brief can be detrimental to a conversation, or make you appear like you don't care to participate. But over time I realized that, by being brief, I get a lot more attention from people, so they ask more questions, reach out more often, because they know I won't drag them into a lengthy debate.īut don't fall into the extreme opposite. They'll let you know if they are interested in hearing the backstory. If someone asks for someone specific, give them that information, and perhaps mention that there's more to be said about it. Here's the thing: nobody cares about the history of the universe. One of the best way to disrupt any discussion or debate is indeed to be overly verbose, to extend your commentary into infinity, and to bore people to death. Pascal's famous quote - If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter - is strong advice. Je n’ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parce que je n’ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte. Instead, I thought it might be useful to share a few things that I've learned over the last seven years, as I went from senior engineer to senior manager. ![]() I'm not going to spend an entire post reminiscing about the good ol' days (though those days were good indeed). Will Indonesia be able to retrieve the ship from the bottom of the sea? Or there could have been human error."īut short of retrieving the submarine or its parts from the seabed, investigators may never be able to determine the exact cause of the tragedy. "There could have been a fire, something particularly feared by submariners in their enclosed environment. "It does not take much loss of buoyancy for a submarine to lose control of its depth. "Causes could include a material or mechanical failure leading to catastrophic flooding of one or more compartments," he wrote in The Conversation this week. Retired Australian Rear Admiral James Goldrick said "material failure" is the most likely explanation for the sub's loss. It was due for another refit last year but this was delayed because of the pandemic. The 1,395-tonne KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1978. The KRI Nanggala 402 was built in 1978 and was last overhauled in 2012, almost a decade ago. Many other experts point to metal fatigue from cracks or corrosion, and the sub's age, as more likely causes. Officials say the sub was also designed to carry up to eight torpedoes - weighing about one tonne each - but only had four at the time of the disaster. "The sub was originally for 33 personnel, then it was modernised to comply with our need to have 50 personnel onboard," Admiral Iwan said. ![]() They also deny that the sub was overloaded, a theory suggested because there were 53 crew on board but only 34 beds, instead arguing that the crew were divided into three shifts and took turns to sleep. Some have suggested that the sub was hit by a missile from a foreign vessel, or even experienced a power blackout.īut naval officials say the submarine was still detected as it began its dive for the torpedo drill, and "the lights were on" - meaning there was only a small chance that an electrical blackout was to blame. "The wave was about two nautical miles and the volume of water was about two to four million cubic litres."Īdmiral Iwan explained an internal wave could render the crew helpless in the face of nature.ĭebris from the submarine was found in the waters during a search operation. "It moved up from the bottom to the north, and there's a trench between two mountains," said Rear Admiral Iwan Isnurwanto, Commander of the Indonesian Navy Command and Staff School. Indeed, navy officials say images from Japan's Himawari 8 satellite, as well as European satellite Sentinel showed there were large underwater waves that coincided with the KRI Nanggala 402 sinking. Because an internal solitary wave occurred at that time in the north of Bali," he told Indonesian media this week. "Our suspicion falls on natural conditions. Rear Admiral Muhammad Ali, a former commander of KRI Nanggala 402, and now an assistant of planning and budgeting in the Indonesian navy, said an internal wave was effectively "a strong current which can drag the sub vertically so it would sink faster than it should." Internal waves can look like ripples on the ocean's surface, like this satellite image shot by NASA in 2013. The Lombok Strait between the islands of Bali and Lombok is said to be famous for generating intense internal waves on an almost fortnightly basis. The sub was passing through dangerous waters Many theories have been put forward but authorities now say there is evidence an underwater wave - that can exert an intense vertical pull below the sea surface - occurred in the Bali Sea around the very time the submarine disappeared last Wednesday morning. The vessel sank to a depth of 838 metres, far beyond the reach of rescuers.Īs the personal effects of crew members floated up and the oxygen supply on board slowly dwindled, officials said there was no chance anyone survived. Indonesian navy officials suspect an internal solitary wave, known to occur in the seas around Bali, may have caused the sinking of KRI Nanggala 402, and the loss of its 53 crew. As an Indonesian navy submarine crewed by 53 men glided below the surface of the Bali Sea during a routine training exercise, it may have been hit by an invisible but powerful force that dragged them to the deep. |
